Biscuit Donuts

2 May

I’ve had a recent obsession with donuts lately. I blame it on my other obsession with trying to travel to Portland, OR. The other day the Travel Channel was featuring Portland, so of course I had to watch. They have the most amazing little place there – VooDoo Donuts.

Now, I come from a town where something like VooDoo donuts would be chased out by a good hand full ย of the town’s people with a torch and pitchfork. These donuts definitely caught my attention and I instantly wanted to make them. I’ve never made donuts before, so I also wanted to try something simple. Biscuit donuts were my answer.

These were the simplest things I think that I have ever made. I just woke up this morning and remembered that I had some canned biscuit dough in the back of my fridge just begging to be used before it expired. I happily obliged it as I heated up the oil and decided what tool would be best for punching holes out of the donuts. I decided on a 2 liter lid – it was a good decision.

Biscuit Donuts

  • 1 Can of Buttermilk Biscuits (mine were generic, use what you wish)
  • 1/2 inch Canola Oil (most recipes call for peanut oil, but that’s a no-go in this house)
  • Cinnamon Sugar for dusting

Open your biscuits and place them on your counter. Take your instrument of choice – I used a 2 liter lid – and push holes through the center of your biscuits. They should look like donuts now – see, simple. Be sure to save your holes, they fry the exact same way the donuts do.

Wait for your oil to be hot enough. I wasn’t really sure what “hot enough” was, so I just dipped the edge of the donut in the oil when it appeared to be getting hot. If it’s hot enough, the oil around the edge of the donut will bubble. You can do it my way, but I’m sure there’s a thermometer or something that will actually measure the correct temperature.

When your oil is ready place 4 donuts in the oil and allow to fry for 1.5 -2 minutes on each side. Remove from oil and transfer to a wire cooling rack. Repeat with the rest of your donuts.

There’s all sorts of toppings to go on donuts – go crazy. I thought an orange glaze would just be divine. However, this morning, I was not feeling crazy. So, I went with something safe – cinnamon sugar.

I poured my cinnamon and sugar into a bowl, mixed it up and rolled the donuts in it while they were still warm and then served them immediately. They were a hit.

Ah, I’m jealous! I’m from WV & our cool food joints are extremely limited.

That was my problem, I always wanted to & never did. I just woke up yesterday & decided to try it. I ended up making more in the evening with different glazes – I’ll be posting those later.
